CCTV has become an important element of security, and is increasingly visible in residential areas, but there are some key things you need to be aware of when installing a system. Here, we cover those issues for you.
CCTV doesn’t prevent crime: Many see the presence of cameras as a deterrent, but balaclavas are cheap; in other words, a determined criminal will hide their face, so that deterrent effect is likely to apply only to opportunists.
Lack of monitoring: What CCTV can do is allow real-time monitoring of activity, but for that to be effective it’s essential that the systems are actually monitored. If you only review after an incident, unscrupulous individuals may quickly realise that the system isn’t being monitored.
Technical problems: It’s not uncommon for systems to go down, which again highlights the importance of regular monitoring and / or alerts as these allow for early detection and remedy.
Physical security of the system: Just as many burglars can quickly disable alarms, they can also destroy or even remove the recording equipment and media. Safeguard your system by storing it securely.
Inadequate coverage: Undertake a proper risk assessment to ensure you have the key areas covered. Criminals can easily identify a clear route into your property if there is one, even with cameras in place.
