The need for CCTV systems is rising in the UK with the majority of home owners installing systems to monitor and protect their property. With this increase demand for CCTV it’s important to bear in mind that where you put your cameras and how you use them could affect your neighbours as well as passers-by and as such you have a responsibility to use your equipment responsibly.
Things to consider:
Check the scope that your cameras cover, if the scope looks out onto a neighbour’s property then it’s important to try to reduce this as much as possible to limit any intrusion of privacy. If it’s not possible to block out the neighbours property then it may be polite to show the neighbours the camera and check that they are ok with it.
If your camera looks out on to a public right of way then you may want to display signs to inform the public that their images are being captured on CCTV, this can actually help to increase your security further as it can be a deterrent against theft and anti-social behaviour.
As a responsible CCTV user you should also ensure that you regularly delete any images captured and don’t keep any recordings for longer than necessary.
